School of Bayesian Modeling, Computation and Applications

School of Bayesian Modeling, Computation and Applications

The Summer School on Bayesian modeling, computation and applications is hosted by the UEH School of Economics, Law and Government (UEH – CELG) in collaboration with the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), in which the Faculty of Mathematics – Statistics and the Institute of Applied Mathematics of CELG take on the main organizing role. The summer school takes place from July 23, 2025 to August 1, 2025 with many exciting academic activities including 14 lectures by world-leading professors on Bayesian Statistics, two-day Workshop on Bayesian Statistics, applied computation, 01 poster exhibition session by participants and 01 field trip to the Southwest. The 10-day summer school program was successful and received the attention of many domestic and international researchers, lecturers and students. This is the third session in the Summer School series on Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning. In 2025, the program continues the topics of hierarchical and dynamic models, Bayesian computation and applications. The goal of the summer school is to equip researchers, lecturers, and graduate students in Vietnam with fundamental knowledge and modern topics in mathematical statistics and machine learning, through a series of lectures that are reasonably designed and taught by world-leading experts; organize workshops with high-quality reports from domestic and foreign researchers; and strengthen the connection between domestic students and researchers with the international statistical and machine learning research community through lectures and activities interspersed in the program, creating opportunities for research cooperation as well as orientation for postgraduate study.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Minh Ha – Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics emphasized that the Summer School is the result of close cooperation between the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics and domestic and foreign units, creating an environment for lecturers, students and researchers to access modern statistical knowledge, contributing to improving the capacity and position of the Vietnamese statistics industry.

Dr. Dinh Cong Khai – Vice President of UEH shared: “UEH’s cooperation with VIASM in organizing this Summer School demonstrates a sustainable commitment to academic quality and research capacity building. This event demonstrates UEH’s belief in the transformative power of education and knowledge, and affirms UEH’s role as a training center, nurturing talent and promoting interdisciplinary cooperation. Through a well-designed program, the Summer School provides researchers and students in Vietnam with a solid knowledge foundation and modern tools to solve practical challenges. In the context of a developing country like Vietnam, this is an activity of special significance in equipping the domestic academic community with advanced knowledge and a global perspective.”

This year’s Summer School program includes three specialized courses and in-depth lectures taught by leading international professors. Course A – Bayesian Modeling and Inference taught by Professor Steve MacEachern (Ohio State University, USA) and Professor Peter Mueller (University of Texas, Austin, USA) focuses on fundamental knowledge and inference in Bayesian modeling. Course B – Bayesian and Variational Bayesian Computation taught by Professor Yanxun Xu (Johns Hopkins University, USA) and Professor Garritt Page (Brigham Young University, Utah, USA) introduces Bayesian and variational Bayesian computational techniques. Course C – Advanced Modeling and Methods for Spatiotemporal Data and Biomedical/Biostatistical Applications includes in-depth topics: Professor Hau-Tieng Wu (New York University, USA) presents From Non-stationary Time Series to Manifold Learning; Professor Veera Baladandayuthapani (University of Michigan, USA) introduces Graphical Models and Spatial Data Analysis; and Professor. Peter Mueller (University of Texas at Austin, USA) lectures on Bayesian Nonparametric (BNP) Data Analysis. These courses and lectures not only provide a solid foundation of knowledge but also broaden the vision of modern research directions in Bayesian statistics and application areas.

In addition, within the framework of the Summer School, the Workshop on Statistical Modeling and Applications takes place in 2 days 25-26/07/2026, including 14 presentations by domestic and foreign researchers and speakers. The reports at the workshop provide a comprehensive view of the strong and diverse development of Bayesian statistics and data science, covering all aspects from profound fundamental theories to diverse practical applications to solve complex problems in many different fields. The workshop provides a vibrant academic forum, connecting theoretical and applied research directions.
